ASUS N53SV-XV1 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Silver Aluminum)

I have been searching for the laptop in my dreams for months, and after solving the ASUS N53SV-XV1 I can say with 100% certainty that I made the right choice. This is the best laptop you can buy for the money. There is simply nothing else on the market right now for this value. The core components (processor, hard drive, screen, sound, graphics) is unsurpassed. It allows you to transfer a 15 "laptop and the performance of a desktop computer.

Advantages:
- Good performance of Intel 2nd generation Sandy Bridge CPU (quiet, efficient and powerful)
- The sound is fantastic. Highest speakers on a laptop (great for watching TV / movies) and built-in base
- 1080p is 1920 x 1080 screen, fantastic and great for multitasking
- Good but not good NVIDIA graphics
- 4 memory slots allowing you to get 16 GB max, if you upgrade
- 7200 RPM hard drive means you get the most performance without paying hundreds still too expensive SSD
- Full Keyboard
- USB 3.0 (will be standard on most new laptops soon, though)
- ASUS Global and accidental warranty is standard

Cons:
- Not as much RAM as you could hope for, even to get more is relatively cheap and easy to install
- Average life span for a 15 "laptop
- Keyboard is a bit funky and takes some getting used to. Not even backlighting.

* NOTE *
- The chipset is an Intel HM65, HM55 not listed on Amazon.
- This laptop is a bit wider than most size 15 "laptops (about an inch), but almost equal in other dimensions, it may have trouble fitting in bags or boxes intended for standard 15.6 .."
- When first posted, Amazon listed this laptop have a eSATA port. It's actually not have one, and it was removed from the product description.

My priorities when buying a new laptop was performance, high-resolution screen and portability. This laptop accomplish what I need better than anything else out there right now. I say right now, because things can change when all the major manufacturers, the new processors in their models and start cranking out similar settings. But who knows when that will happen and even then it will be hard pressed to match the value on this computer.

If you are considering buying this computer, I would only recommend that you buy more RAM because it comes with only 2 x 2 GB, and there are two more seats to fill (I have purchased and installed an extra 2 x 4 GB receive a total of 12 GB). Battery life is not so great but because the battery is a standard 6-cell. If you need to be disconnected for more than three or three and a half hours, I would recommend investing in a bigger battery, because this laptop was not necessarily intended to be the ultimate in portability. It has also been some complaints about the keyboard, but it's really not that bad, and just takes some getting used to. If you do not like it, get a new one, and it takes only minutes to replace.

If you have any questions, feel free to add comments in my review and I'll try to answer them as soon as possible!

ASUS N53SV-XE1 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Silver Aluminum)

This machine was just what I was looking for ... and for those of you who are like me, yes, it's the computer that you want to buy. I have been on the market for a new laptop for almost a year and a half years and have diligently examined all possibilities within this time frame ... from MacBook Pro for Sony Acer Dell, etc. you name it, I looked at the specs vs. cost vs. reliability.

I looked hard at the previous version of this laptop and almost bought it, but was really sold when they updated it with the new Sandy Bridge processor. I have not added any RAM yet, but I'm glad I can add more.

My last laptop was a 17 "Dell Inpsiron 9300 purchased in December 2005. I take very good care of my machines ... probably did about 3 clean installations of Windows on it since purchase (including going from XP to Vista.) If I no do not worry your hard disk goes out of it, I would continue using it ... serves me well, albeit slowly.

Pros
- The specs on this machine is big, big i7 processor, video card ... This should be enough machine for many people.
- The price is very reasonable for the technology you must ... You can find similar machines, but they will downgrade you at any time ... whether it is RPM hard drive, RAM or graphics cards.
- Robust construction
- Maybe more to come ... have not had the time yet

Cons
- It is a great laptop, its very similar to the size of my Dell but I can not travel with it much, so it's nice
- All ports on the sides with the exception of power ... Once again, this is only a con if you use it mainly at a desk and do not have plans to move with it much.
- Screen resolution - this is not a big con for me, but something to think about ... I went from a 17 "screen at 1920 x 1200 for this machine monitor. It's good for myself, I have already become used to it.
- ASUS drivers and software is still confusing me ... I try to delete some things I will not use (TrendMicro Virus Protection), and some of the game demos etc and I encounter the same problems as others (lost functionality, volume buttons). I went to the support page here: [...] and installed the ATK package and things seem to work now. I have read the manual to fully understand the other options, such as power management, had never such a thing before. That said, I have no problem with companies to install software on their machines. From what I understand it keeps costs down, and I believe it is part of the process of creating a new computer to remove it you do not want.
- The keyboard seems a little thin, but to me its like the spongy-ness of my old Dell and I can not really see that there is a problem. I disabled the touchpad, so I can not see that ... I use an external mouse.

I can update as time goes on ...

- Update 04/10/11 - For anyone who has problems with speakers and sound quality of this machine, go to Start Menu> Virage Logic> ASUS sonic master ... I thought my speakers was blown up or crushed, until I realized that the factory settings for all audio enhancements to be enabled ... This caused my music sound distorted and blurred. I guess this machine is designed to play back high quality audio files, and then you will probably need to fiddle with the settings if you have MP3 files.

- Update 4/12/11 - [...] - it's support site for this specific laptop. If you have lost functionality of the Fn key because the uninstall pre-installed software and then download ATK-file and run it. It worked for me.

- Update 01/06/11 - After a solid two months of use I am satisfied with this purchase. Other reviewers have commented on how the display looks "washed out" when they are not in the best position. This would definitely be an irritation if I use the laptop on my lap or outside, but this is mainly a desktop replacement laptop for me ... and given the size of the laptop (about the size of my Dell 9300 17 ") I would hesitate to recommend it to anyone planning to use it on the go all the time. It is not difficult to go from office to the living room, but anything more would be a pain. If you are looking for an ultra-portable, it is not. I am still very impressed with the overall performance of the machine. I host a server Minecraft beta on it and then play on the server with literally no slowdown on the server or my game. If you have problems with games, etc. Then, right click the game and watch video card options. I had problems at first, while running on the server and play the game at the same time because I was not aware that both ran out of integrated graphics memory instead of the GPU. I do not know if this machine knows when to switch between integrated graphics and GPU automatically, but it gives you a practical opportunity to choose before you run the program by right-clicking on it.

I have two problems with this machine, but they are more uncomfortable than anything else. The first is the speaker. Although it sounds nice when it's cranked up it sounds distorted, like all other laptops I've heard. I expected the sound to keep up better on max volume into account, it seems to be the major selling point. The second is the placement of the USB ports. They are located on the left and right sides of the machine near the front. After I've attached an external hard drive, a wireless mouse receiver, and an iPod cable ... Not only have I used up all USB 2.0 ports, but I also watch to make sure that my mouse does not hit the wires coming out from the side of the machine. These two issues are more uncomfortable than anything else, but worth noting.

- Update 07/01/11 - After fooling around more with the speaker, I think it finally is completely firm. I went through all the sound settings and disabled all software-based "improvements". I do not know exactly what it was that made it finally happen, but after uncheck each box and starts, sounds fantastic speaker. I can turn it all the way up, no distortion!

ASUS A52F-XA3 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop - Dark Grey

Asus A52F-series is a good laptop with good fit and finish. The features included are also great - HDMI output lets you connect your notebook to a larger screen and watch HD movies, where you can get. Speed is more than acceptable for all but the hardcore user, and includes the memory is also quite adequate. Installation is pretty easy on the first run and only takes a few minutes. The accompanying numeric keypad is a nice touch, and the keyboard itself has a nice feel. The overall impression generated a lot of lovely comments, it is very thin and well made.

Like most vendors, including Asus a lot of software (bloatware) that is completely unnecessary. I spent more time trying to remove the silly additions than I did to configure the machine, and if you're not picky, you can find some of them useful, but I personally do not need it most. Although the touchpad is much like any other, despite the description - you will probably need to adjust the sensitivity so the cursor does not move when you are resting your hands on the house. Battery life is average.

I would highly recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a new machine, hardcore gamers want more horsepower, but this unit is a great day drivers.

ASUS A53SV-XE1 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop - Black

If you look at this laptop, you are probably the same type of laptop I was: a strong, attractive, quality laptop that does not break the bank. I am happy to say that Asus A53sv-XE1 live up to those expectations nicely.

Design is top notch. The A53 is attractive without looking garish. The lid to the black has a small, beautiful interlocking patterns of cell type on it. If it is not your thing, the design is weak enough that it probably will not bother you too much. The cover is nice and sturdy seem pressing it to not touch the screen. The chiclet keyboard feels comfortable typing is a breeze. The keys press down with a satisfying feeling. The controls in the game feels smooth. Touchpad works and I do not mind using it, but I prefer a real mouse. The whole keyboard area is built out of aluminum, just like the MacBook Pro, and looks / feels very nice. Nice quality. The A53 also feels quite easy and it is a pleasure to carry around.

Processing and graphics performance is excellent, as can be expected with Sandy Bridge i7 processor, six concerts of DDR3 RAM and a Nvidia 540 with Optimus. The i7 can handle most reading tasks with impunity. Game-wise, run A53 Crysis 2, Empire: Total War and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 smoothly on medium graphics settings (high to Crysis2). While playing, the fan noise is noticeable but not annoying loud. The aluminum hand rest felt pretty cool while you play. The heat management techniques that Asus uses seem to be quite effective. The hard drive is what keeps A53 back. The difference in speed between its 5400 RPM hard drive and a 7200 RPM hard drive is noticeable, and performance suffers.

Battery life is good but not exceptional. You can expect about 4 hours of battery life on a normal laptop use. A little positive is that in my experience Asus laptops tend to have greater power brick, the A53 a nice size one.

The speakers seem to be pretty good, which is somewhat unusual for a laptop in my experience. Nice and noisy.

A negative of this laptop is that it comes with a lot of bloatware. If it bothers you, you have to spend some time trying to uninstall it all, and may need to download some drivers from Asus website to get some laptop functions work again if you do it.

Finally, I must say Asus A53 is an excellent laptop for its price. In my opinion, its positive for excellent design, performance and price far outweigh the disadvantages of bloatware and 5400 rpm hdd. Asus once again proves that it is one of the best brands in the industry. But those who might prefer a faster hard drive and multiple ports, including a USB 3.0 port, would consider Asus N53sv-XE1 for about $ 90 more.
